What is Positive Focus?
Positive Focus is a platform connecting photographers with charities to create impactful imagery. Photographers gain valuable experience, and charities receive high-quality visuals to support their missions.
How does Positive Focus work?
Charities post their photography needs on the platform, and photographers who have completed our training course can apply to work on these projects.
Is Positive Focus free to join?
Yes, it’s completely free for charities. Photographers pay a one-time fee for the training course, but this may be subsidised for some applicants.
Do I need to be based in the UK to participate?
Yes, Positive Focus currently supports photographers and charities operating within the UK.
Is Positive Focus a charity?
No, Positive Focus is a new venture funded with the backing of Innovate UK. It's designed to empower photographers and charities to collaborate effectively.
Does Positive Focus provide insurance for projects?
No, Positive Focus does not provide insurance for photographers or charities. Photographers are responsible for their own public liability or equipment insurance, and charities should ensure appropriate coverage for events or venues.
Who owns the copyright to the photos?
Copyright ownership is agreed upon between the photographer and the charity. In most cases, photographers retain the copyright, but charities receive full usage rights for their projects. Positive Focus recommends that both parties agree on the terms before starting a project.
Can charities use the photos for any purpose?
Charities will typically have the right to use the photos for their campaigns, websites, social media, and other promotional materials. However, usage rights should be discussed and agreed upon between the photographer and the charity.
Can photographers use the photos in their portfolios?
Yes, with the charity’s permission, photographers can use the images in their portfolios or for personal promotion. Positive Focus encourages open communication to ensure both parties are happy with the arrangement.
Do photographers need to provide a contract for the charity?
Positive Focus does not require contracts but strongly encourages photographers and charities to document their agreement, covering copyright, usage rights, and any specific terms for the project.
What kind of photographers are you looking for?
We welcome photographers with a strong interest in storytelling, a willingness to volunteer, and basic photography skills. Even smartphone photographers can join if they demonstrate creativity and professionalism.
Do I need professional equipment to join?
No, advanced equipment is not required. We focus on your creativity and ability to tell compelling stories.
What is included in the photography training course?
The course covers essential skills for working with charities, such as storytelling, PR/editorial photography, and understanding how to create impactful imagery.
Can photographers choose which charity projects to work on?
Yes, after completing the training course, you can browse available projects and apply for the ones that resonate with you and are in your local area.
Will I get paid for my work?
Projects are voluntary, designed to help charities with limited budgets while giving you real-world experience and portfolio growth. Some charities may offer travel costs etc but this will need to be agreed between the two parties before any work is undertaken.
What happens if I can’t complete a project I’ve committed to?
We ask photographers to only commit to projects they can complete. If unforeseen circumstances arise, we’ll work with you and the charity to find a solution if possible.
How much time do I need to commit?
The time required varies depending on the projects you choose. Most assignments are flexible and can fit around your schedule. You are not committing to a specific amount of time when you join Positive Focus. The whole system relies on goodwill and volunteering in order to help charities whilst also building a photography portfolio and real world experience.
What types of charities can join Positive Focus?
Any registered UK charity is welcome to join, regardless of size or focus area.
In some instances we can also accept applications from other non registered charitable institutions and good causes.
Is there a cost for charities?
No, Positive Focus is completely free for charities to join and post projects.
What kind of photography can I request?
You can request photography for campaigns, events, storytelling, social media, and more. The projects can be as small or as detailed as you need. Please liaise with your chosen photographer and agree all the terms before the project starts.
How do I post a project?
Once your charity is approved, you’ll be able to log in to the positive focus community site and post your project details for photographers to view.
What if a photographer doesn’t deliver the agreed work?
Positive Focus facilitates connections but does not manage individual projects. We encourage clear communication between charities and photographers to ensure smooth collaboration.
Please report any issues back to us so that we can address them in the future.
Can I work with the same photographer on multiple projects?
Yes, if both you and the photographer agree, you can collaborate on additional projects.
Do I need to provide anything for the photographer?
Charities should provide clear briefs, background information, and access to events or subjects being photographed. Good communication is key to a successful project.
